The system challenges of de-fossilising petrochemical industrial clusters
In this webinar, Dr. Andrea Ramírez Ramírez, Professor of Low Carbon Systems and Technologies at the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, will introduce key challenges at the system level as well as work we are currently conducting to model the potential resource, energy and costs impacts of de-fossilising multiple and interconnected value chains in a complex petrochemical cluster.
Background:
Ninety percent of raw materials used in the EU chemical industry are from fossil resources. A future industrial system that is independent of fossil resources will require the use of alternative raw materials, such as CO2 or biomass, for the production of chemical and materials. Industrial clusters are, however, complex systems with many and increasingly intertwined processes between and within firms. Interventions in any single process can affect other processes (possibly operated by other firms), both at the local scale of an industrial cluster and in the supply chains involved (which are geographically dispersed).
Dr. Andrea Ramírez Ramírez’s research focuses on the evaluation of novel low carbon technologies and the design of methodologies and tools to assess their potential contribution to sustainable industrial systems. She has (co-) authored over 115 publications and is Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control.
This session is hosted by Dr Benoit Chachuat, Professor of Process Systems Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Department of Chemical Engineering, Imperial College London.
